These figures are inspired by the Greek Caryatids from about 400 B.C., structural columns sculpted in the form of female gift-bearers. These figures may not bear the structural weight of a building, but they summon a greater strength.
In this series, I start with a support armature and then mix batches of plaster to apply on top. I work quickly, waiting for the setting plaster to reach what I call a “cream cheese” stage.
Application time is short, which satisfies my impatient side. Rasping follows, then chopping with a small ax and the addition of more plaster on top. I make a mold sometimes and reproduce it in either Hydrostone plaster or bronze. |
